by Jack Pacheco on Friday, June 9th, 2017

The spring athletic season came to an official close on Wednesday, May 31st, after the annual M-Club banquet. The banquet gathers all 2016- 2017 varsity athletes and honors each athlete’s hard work and achievements.

Overall, it was another great year for Milton athletics with 5 ISL champions including Football, Boys’ and Girls’ Swimming, Skiing, and Girls’ Tennis. The sailing team also placed 2nd in New Englands, and won states. Girls’ Track placed 2nd in ISLs additionally.

For the 2016-2017 season, the Football team was led by captains Allan Rappleyea (I), Mike Silva (I), Wes Hudson (I), and Freddy Okito (I), along with juniors and future captains Jack Czarniak (II), Alec Beesmer (II), Jailen Branch (II), Greg Livingston (II), and Anthony Gallagher (II). The team overcame a grueling schedule to earn a share of the ISL title. Jack Czarniak (II) credits the team’s success to “a great group of captains and seniors who made sure everyone bought in. [They] came together as a team, which really helped [them] win some close games.”

Girls’ Varsity Tennis, which won the New England Championship the past 3 years, was able to continue the program’s success with yet another ISL title. Charis Palandjian (II) attributes the team’s continued success “to the hard work and dedication that the team has in and out of season.” She is “proud to be part of such a successful and hardworking team”. Nina Subkhanberdina (II) cites that “the small team and tight-knit vibe helps us stay driven and support each other in all matches”

The M-Club Awards banquet recognized these teams, as well as all varsity athletes and seniors that played three varsity sports this year. After the M-Club dinner, players from different sports were presented with individual awards to honor their respective achievements in their sports. These awards include the All-ISL award, which is given to a few stand-out players in each sport, and Honorable Mention awards, both of whom are chosen by a committee of ISL coaches.

The league also presents Awards of Excellence, which “recognizes student athletes for exhibiting the Independent School League ideals of integrity, sportsmanship, fair play, and good citizenship, while participating as a multi-sport athlete during their Independent School League career”. Past recipients of this award include Kali Tyler (’16) and Mitchell Donovan (’16). This year, the athletic community honored field hockey, hockey, and softball player Clare Lonergan (I) and Football and Basketball player Freddy Okito (I) for their commitment and positive attitude in the .

Four other major awards, including the Robert Saltonstall medal, the Priscilla Bailey award, the Alfred Elliot award, and the Dorothy J. Sullivan award, were awarded to four outstanding senior athletes. This year, Mike Silva (I) received the Robert Saltonstall medal, given to a young man with a “distinguished record in all-around physical activity, with emphasis on leadership by example… and observance of the code of the true sportsman.”

Varsity soccer and hockey player, and track captain Jen Costa (I) won the Priscilla Bailey award this year, an award given to a girl who is an irreplaceable asset to the Milton Academy athletics program and who exemplifies sportsmanship as well as exceptional skills and talent.

The Alfred Elliott award was given to Varsity Hockey Captain and Varsity Baseball Captain Buddy Mrowka (I); the award honors a male athlete who inspires his teammates and is devoted to his teams.

Maria DiMartinis (I), Varsity Soccer and Hockey Captain, won the Dorothy J. Sullivan award, given to an athlete to epitomizes sportsmanship, positivity, and amazing leadership in the Milton athletic community.

Milton athletes dedicate incredible amounts of time in the offseason, and in season to their respective varsity teams, and the M-Club banquet is designed to honor those who make the athletic program here so successful. The Milton Measure would like to thank all senior athletes for their leadership and hard work during the 2016- 2017 year, and wish them luck at college, whether they continue playing sports or not.
