Milton Academy Golf Team Finds Success at Kingsman Tourney

by on Friday, May 19th, 2017

When people think of Milton sports, football, basketball, or hockey probably come first to mind. But, Milton’s Golf Team should not be forgotten. Without a driving green on campus, our golfers have to drive a little over 6 miles to the Milton Hoosic Club for the one or two practices they can fit in between their three or four matches per week. Despite this commute, MA Golf has managed to have an overall successful season.

The team recently participated in the ISL Kingsman Tournament on Monday, May 15th. Although the team only submitted five players, as opposed to the regular seven, they still had a successful tournament with each golfer contributing to the team’s success.

Jimmy DeLano (II), who placed in the top eight in the tournament, reflected that the “golf team is really a family. We bond on the long bus rides and have lots of fun. All of the guys get along really well…We have a team, not an individual, focused mindset, and this belief makes the atmosphere lively, fun, and non-cutthroat.” This atmosphere sets the Golf team apart from a lot of Milton’s other teams. Especially in a sport based on independent performance, Milton students are tempted to compare themselves to others. Finding a place where that constant competition is less prominent—as the gold team has—is a rare and special find.

This season has been especially stand-out for the golf team. With a record of 16 wins, 5 losses, and 3 ties, the team is seeded 3rd in the ISL. Undefeated this season, St. Sebastian’s currently leds in the ISL. Despite losing Will Goldberg (II) halfway through the season and recently losing Austin Vyas (I) in the middle of his round in the Kingsman Tournament due to injuries, Jimmy commented that “the new guys, Michael Ma (III), Daniel Suter (IV), and Sam Murray (I), have really stepped up.” Sam is really happy he decided to play golf this year and feels that the team “is a great group of guys with a lot of banter.” Charlie Keohan (II) shared that mentality saying, “our close bond and support for each other has helped us to have an incredible season.” The players are hopeful that the team will place 3rd in the upcoming ISL Championships. While placing 3rd is not always as exciting as winning the whole championship, it would still mark a fittingly successful end to a successful season.

The exciting and open atmosphere of the team created an environment in which the entire team was able to succeed, and Milton’s golf team looks forward to more successful seasons in the upcoming years.
