Grease Takes Centre Stage

by Adrian Hackney on Friday, May 19th, 2017

The 1950’s teemed with bold fashion and catchy music. Grease, Milton’s latest production, portrays the experiences of teenagers as they navigate high school during this vibrant, fast-paced era. The musical, which first hit theaters in 1971 now comes to Milton with the promise of boundless energy. Director Eleza Moyer and her talented cast revive a musical that once captured countless audiences and undoubtedly will again. Milton’s upcoming production of Grease stands out for its versatile cast and impressive tech.

Grease follows main characters Danny Zuko, Sandy Dumbrowski, and Betty Rizzo, played by Spencer Evett (I), Eshani Chakrabarti (I), and Dorsey Glew (II), as they encounter and overcome obstacles in their high-school environment. The musical handles topics ranging from love to politics. Grease, of course, features energetic music and choreography that make it such an iconic production. Whenever scenes arrive at intense, thrilling moments, actors break into song and dance, which capitalize on the musical’s mood. A combination of the two may seem daunting, but the versatile actors have taken this task in stride. Their determination and commitment are apparent as they honor Grease’s true spirit.

The music takes its inspiration from rock and roll and includes hits such as “You’re The One that I Want” and “Grease Lightnin”. The musical’s choreography stands out to many as a highlight. Actors repeatedly cited the dance performed with the song “Shakin’ at the High School Hop” as a favorite. The Milton cast itself consists of many accomplished, devoted actors. Since the musical’s beginning, students have certainly bonded and united through their love for theatre and storytelling. Unlike most Milton productions, the cast has a strong freshman presence. The freshmen’s involvement inspires cross-grade relationships that amplify cast spirit. Grease’s skillful cast lays the perfect foundation for the production of a beloved classic.

The environment that the actors inhabit plays an equally critical role in the musical, and Milton’s Tech Crew has exceeded expectations. With authentic touches, the set perfectly capture the 50’s vibe that Grease encapsulates. Multiple backdrops set the scene for different events and incorporate colorful palettes that match the play’s vibrancy. The stage’s blue color, along with impactful lighting, heightens the set’s lively atmosphere. The eye-catching costumes stay true to the time period and superbly reflect the lively set. Fashion flourished during the 50’s, and the costumes revive and celebrate such a booming period for clothing. Grease’s set, tech, and costumes embrace many memorable aspects of culture from the 50’s.

Grease shows every sign of a notable production. The collaboration of cast and crew makes for a truly special performance that should not be missed. The musical will open on Thursday, May 18, at 7:30. It will also run on Friday, May 19, at 7:30 and Saturday, May 20, at 7:00. Abby Foster (III), a cast member, says, “Grease will be a fun time with great energy”. Come out and support the cast as it breathes life into a long-cherished masterpiece!
