The Milton Measure

[Editorial] Letter from Your New Board

by The Milton Measure on Friday, May 19th, 2017

In our new role as the Editorial Board, we will strive to provide the Milton community with information and entertainment in a way that is as authentic, insightful, and relevant as ever. This year, clear and honest communication will be at the core of The Milton Measure’s mission. Moving forward, we want to strengthen not only the publication’s relationship with the Milton community, but also our relationship with our beloved writers.

Recent events have divided our campus more than ever before. While the privilege posters and unsettling hate speech demonstrate the apparent schisms in our society, they simultaneously demonstrate a need for more effective communication with one another. It’s true that Miltonian culture certainly breeds strong, opinionated minds. However, we seem to spend more time arguing than actually listening and understanding one another. As we’ve seen, our inability to comprehend differing perspectives can lead to further polarization and conflict on campus. The Milton Measure would like to maintain an information-based platform that provides news and showcases the various opinions on campus.

To navigate these issues on campus, the Editorial Board would like to that address the needs of both our writers and our readers. The Milton Measure currently selects its writers for their diversity of perspectives and opinions as well as their writing ability. We are a non-partisan newspaper, and we hope to give every idea a fair hearing. Next year, we plan to form more personal relationships with our writers. These changes can be as simple as providing writing feedback to our writers or holding monthly meetings to directly address questions and concerns they may have. We will support and encourage our writers in their pursuit to share the issues that they deeply care about.

We want our articles to not only confront pressing external news, but also discuss the challenges we face on campus. We recognize that many groups and clubs feel disconnected from The Milton Measure. Although we cannot totally transform our peers’ perception of The Milton Measure, we will take concrete steps to strengthen our commitment to independence, fairness, and transparency. Communication with the entire student body will be key to building trust and promoting discussion. We will make reaching out to club representatives and leaders our priority so that their voices do not remain unheard. Letters to the Editor will be featured more regularly since communication is not a one-way street.

We hope these changes demonstrate this board’s dedication to clear communication and open dialogue. We will not shy away from controversy and instead will seek to provide a voice rooted both in fairness and justice.
