Class Reps: New Classes, New Faces for Next Year

by on Friday, May 19th, 2017

A slew of speeches, voting on myMilton, and high-spirited Q&A questions has resulted in the election of 6 new students to the SGA. Class reps are responsible for planning assemblies, attending weekly SGA meetings and, of course, “bridging the gap between the students and the administration.” Students across the Milton community hope that their class reps are approachable and truly voice their opinions to people of power. In an especially polarized and climactic year both within the student body and outside of Milton, the role of student representatives is as important as ever.

The Class of 2020 elected Beck Kendig and Pari Palandjian to represent their class for the remainder of the 2016-2017 year and the 2017-2018 year. Pari, a day student from Milton, plays on Milton’s Girls Varsity Tennis team, participates in Model UN, and Entrepreneurship Club. Beck, a boarder in Wolcott from Carlisle, Massachusetts, now living in Marblehead, does Varsity Soccer, Ski Team, and Track. Beck and Pari both expressed that they ran for class rep to serve their classmates. Pari added that “[she] decided to run because [she] knew that [she] was prepared to dedicate [her] time, effort, and love to [her] class,” while Beck “wants to make the lives of [his] peers better in any way possible.” The class reps for next year’s sophomores hope to enact real change; Pari explains that “there is a perception that Milton is stagnant in certain ways, so it has been exciting and refreshing to see effort being made to work on our campus’ issues.”

Asia Chung and Cole Ehret were chosen as class representatives for the Class of 2019. Cole, a day student from Beacon Hill, plays on Milton’s Varsity Soccer team, ski team, and JV Lacrosse team. Asia, a boarder in Robbins from Kingston, Jamaica, swims on Milton’s swim team, participates in Track and Field, takes photos for the yearbook, and attends Asian Society. As a new sophomore, Asia “knew the difficulty of being new in such a big community, so [she wanted] to make sure that everyone’s next few years are great.”

Last, but definitely not least, is the Class of 2018. Next year’s seniors chose Elizabeth Foster-Feigenbaum and Zac Mustin to pave the way for their last year on campus. Liz is a writer for the F-Word, a passionate equestrian, and a day student from Dover, Massachusetts. Zac, a boarder from Street, England, sings for 3FU, and most notably, was the 2014 English National Microsoft Excel Champion on the 2007 edition of Microsoft Excel. “Liz is very relatable and Zac has a soothing British accent, and they seem to mesh well together,” says Olivia Risoleo (II), commenting on the ability of the elected students. Both representatives express that many current juniors are often unhappy with Milton. They hope to represent the grade well and address issues head-on. Zac elaborates on the job, saying “since assemblies are pretty much the only time we spend together as a whole grade, if everyone always feels bored and down, the grade as a whole will feel bored and down. Mr. Bland often talks about how important the seniors are to any high school community, and that’s why the senior class reps have to have lots of energy and make people’s time useful: it gives the grade lots of energy and makes it useful.”

As the school year unwinds, the students of Milton Academy must slowly diverge into their own paths, whether that be preparing for college or preparing for their next year at Milton. Class representatives are already working hard to ease that transition, by working with students on their hopes for the next year. We look forward to seeing the great work that next year’s leadership brings.
