The Milton Measure

[Editorial] It’s Been a Good Year to be CXXII

by on Friday, April 28th, 2017

According to a CNBC report, after Donald Trump was elected, The New York Times subscription growth soared tenfold. In a similar vein, the CXXII Editorial Board consistently found ourselves selling out of Measures at recess on Friday. We literally could not keep up with student demand. It was a great year to be in the news. And we mean this more seriously too.

We had the opportunity to track the presidential election which included not only an editorial endorsing Clinton but also an editorial apologizing for dismissing Trump’s chances. Having the election as source material allowed the journalism of our whole publication to mature, grow, and, honestly, feel more impactful.

Closer to Milton, we got to report on the new SGA amendment and track it from its inception to its presentation to the student body. Both at a national and local level, political intrigue was ever present, and The Measure was never far from the action.

On the sports side of things, our board was blessed by the GOAT with a Super Bowl win, and we also had the good fortune and expertise to publish Milton’s first ever soccer column, Corner Kick, which was received to rave reviews.

In the arts, reviews of Nesto Gallery exhibits and movies like La La Land, features on Film Club and Improv nights, and interviews with the One Act directors and Matt Trammell brought a cultured, cosmopolitan feel to our paper. Drake also dropped more chunes for your headtop.

As a board this year, we learned a lot, and hopefully taught you something new or caused you to think about an issue more deeply. In this year full of journalistic opportunities, we gained more than problem solving and editing skills. In collectively some of our best experiences at Milton, we discovered the best way to compromise, work together, build amazing friendships, and reach school audiences.

We may have had a few hiccups along the way, such as saying the Class of 2016 graduated in 2015 or when our layout software crashed in both our first and tenth issues, but in the end, every other week we found a way to bring Milton the news it so desperately craves.

However, we could not do this alone and wanted to extend a few thanks. First and foremost, we would like to thank our writers. They are the ones who teased out and reported on what makes Milton, Milton, and very literally without them, there is no paper. We would also love to thank our humor writers. We would like to thank Ms. Matson, our wonderful faculty supervisor who did much more work than anyone can realize. Thanks to Ukraine for driving a majority of our web traffic. Lastly, we would also like to thank The Milton Paper for making us look better.

CXXII Editorial Board out.
