Lax and Tennis Travel to Arizona and San Diego for Spring Break

by on Thursday, March 9th, 2017

For the past several years, the Girls’ Lacrosse team has trained in Clearwater, Florida over March break. However, concerns over the Zika virus have caused the team to switch their trip location to Casa Grande, Arizona. The Mustangs will be practicing, working out, and scrimmaging other teams as a part of the Trilogy Lacrosse program. One benefit of this program is that the hotel, fields, and gym are all in the same location: the Grande Sports World complex. Captain Sara O’Connor (I) explains that, “[the team] will have a lot more time to play lacrosse and do team activities since we don’t have to travel far to the fields.”

However, the new trip has some drawbacks as well. In Florida, the team played other schools similar to those they play against during the season, but this year will be different. Sara explains that the Milton girls’ team is “the only girls team at the program, so [the team] will be playing local club teams instead of other schools.” The team is excited about all of the activities that the new location has to offer. According to Sara, they “will be hiking and rock climbing for some of [their] workouts, which [they] never had the option to try in Florida.” While the team will not have access to the beach as they did in prior years, the girls are excited about the swimming pool and bonfire at their resort. Overall, the team is very excited about the new opportunities and activities of their upcoming trip.

The Girls’ and Boys’ Tennis Teams are travelling to San Diego for the second half of spring break. In addition to their intense tennis training, they are planning to visit Sea World and observe matches at the University of San Diego. The Boys’ captain, Noah Cheng (I), is “excited about the balance [they] will have between playing tennis and exploring the La Jolla area.” The teams did not go on a spring break trip last year but went to Miami two years ago.

Charis Palandjian (II) said that “San Diego is a perfect location because it has beaches like Miami, but the weather is more bearable and slightly colder than Miami.” A lot of their tennis sessions were cut short in Miami due to the heat, so hopefully San Diego will allow for longer hitting sessions. Katherine McDonough (III) thinks that a trip to San Diego is the “perfect place to prepare for the season.”

While some may think that a tennis trip is unnecessary because of access to indoor courts, playing outside is actually quite different, and therefore practicing inside and out is very important. This trip will also be a great bonding opportunity for the teams, especially with less than 20 students going on the trip. Mollie Ames (I) is “really excited to get to know the people who weren’t on the team last year.” The trip to San Diego should be a very productive and fun way for the Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis Teams to not only become closer, but also improve their tennis skills.
