Boys Teams Advance to New England’s on Nobles Day

by on Thursday, March 9th, 2017

Renewing their centuries old rivalry, the Mustangs and the Bulldogs clashed in numerous athletic contests this past weekend. From its exuberant fan bases to the remarkable on-field competition, Milton-Nobles Day lived up to the hype. The Milton basketball and hockey teams played with pride and resilience, literally placing their bodies on the line for their schools. And the Milton fans, including the “Centre Street Hooligans,” showed up in large numbers with very spirited and enthusiastic support.

In perhaps the most highly anticipated match of the weekend, the Milton Boys’ Varsity Basketball team won a close game by a score of 65- 57. While Milton led for most of the game, Nobles made regular runs to keep the contest close. Cheered on by a packed student section, Freddy Okito (I) led the charge for Milton. Scoring ten points, Freddy also played incredible defense. Cormac Ryan (II) also came up big by hitting some key three pointers to drive back a surging Nobles squad. The victory granted Milton a spot in the NEPSAC Quarterfinal. The Boys’ JV team, led by DJ Murrell (III), played with the same grit but unfortunately came up short and lost by three points to Nobles’ JV team.

In a valiant effort, the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team faced a dominant Nobles squad, one that won the ISL this season with an 11-0 record. While the Milton girls were able to score and present a formidable challenge for most of the game, Nobles’ fierce offense proved too difficult to contain. Despite being the overwhelming underdog, the Milton girls played with heart and never surrendered. The result for the Girls’ JV team was similar. Fortunately, since both girls’ basketball teams have many returning players, next season looks extremely bright.

On the ice, the Milton Boys’ Varsity Hockey team avenged an early season loss to Nobles by beating the Bulldogs 3-2 on Nobles Day. Nobles never gave up and played hard the whole game, but Milton’s tough defense was too much for Nobles to handle. The Mustangs also adjusted from their previous game against Nobles to muster more offense. Like the basketball team, hockey advanced to the NEPSAC Quarterfinal with the victory. Unfortunately, the Milton Boys’ JV Hockey team stumbled, losing 9-0 in their game against Nobles’ JV team.

Milton’s Girls’ Varsity Hockey team lost an extremely hard-fought and exciting game with Nobles. The game was razor close with both teams playing quickly and aggressively. After the second period, the Mustangs found themselves down 3-1 to a top ranked Nobles team. However, Milton clawed their way back to make it 3-3 at the end of regulation. In overtime, Milton unfortunately was the first to give up a goal and lost by a final score of 4-3. On the other hand, Girls’ JV Hockey crushed Nobles by a score of 6-3.

After showing up in large numbers this Milton Nobles Day to cheer on their teams, the Centre Street Hooligans undoubtedly fueled both Milton’s athletic success against Nobles and some controversy with the Nobles parents. Some parents complained that the Hooligans cheered too loud and sometimes the taunting antics were overly disrespectful to Nobles players. Unfortunately, many of those parents felt that the Hooligans’ spirited display of community spirit and camaraderie conflicted with their own staled sense of Friday night fun and rivalry. From their exotic costumes to their witty cheers, the Hooligans are as much a part of Milton-Nobles Day as anything else.

Regardless of the athletic outcomes, congratulations to all the Milton athletes, fans, and Hooligans who made this Nobles weekend memorable. Their competitive spirit and unwavering sportsmanship will always make Milton-Nobles Day a classic rivalry and exciting event.
