NHL Playoffs Begin

by Jack Weiler on Friday, April 29th, 2016

American sports fans are currently spoiled for choice; March Madness may have ended, but Baseball season is just starting up while the NBA and NHL playoffs continue to heat up. The NHL playoffs bring together the sixteen best teams in the NHL, eight from the Eastern Conference, and eight from the Western Conference. Headlining the playoffs this year are the Washington Capitals, led by Alex Ovechkin, who is aiming to grab his first Stanley Cup title. Along with the Capitals, an underdog team to watch are the St. Louis Blues, who on April 25, 2016 defeated the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, in seven games. With first round almost complete, the second round looms ahead.

In the East, the tournament started off with a bang as the New York Islanders defeated the Florida Panthers in 6 games. The Islanders are led by center John Tavares, a 25-year-old from Ontario, Canada. Tavares scored 33 points this regular season and has scored 5 goals already in the playoffs. With this powerful center on the ice, the Islanders will be a team to watch.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, also in the East, are led by two-time MVP Sidney Crosby. The Penguins held their ground in the first round and held the New York Rangers to only one victory in the series. With the former MVP on the ice, the Penguins seem a certain challenger for the Stanley Cup. In the West, Center Joe Thornton willed the San Jose Sharks to a stunning 4-1 series win over the second seeded LA Kings. The Sharks will now face either the Anaheim Ducks or the Nashville Predators in the second round.

The riveting play of the NHL playoffs reel in a ton of fans. Kevin Lu (III) also stated that he “loves the Capitals this year; with TJ Oshie and Alex Ovechkin on that team, they can do anything.” Charis Palandjian (III) also said that they “love seeing how tough the players are out there; especially with all the contact and how cold it is.”

With upsets already, the race for the Stanley Cup this year is loaded with tough competition.
