An Adventure With ODP

The Outdoor Program (ODP) offers weekend outdoor activities for Milton students. Some of this year’s activities have included snowshoeing, cross country skiing, rock climbing, kayaking, and hiking. ODP events are a great way for students to get off campus, enjoy nature, and take a break from school work. Though the activities are geared towards boarders, who are often bored on weekends, many day students also enjoy the opportunities provided by ODP.
This year, Ms. Carpenter is the interim replacement for ODP head and programming teacher Mr. Chung, who is currently on a full-year sabbatical. Ms. Carpenter’s goal is to “help as many people as possible enjoy what the outdoors have to offer and make people proficient at outdoor skills and sports so that they can take their friends on trips and spread that enjoyment to others.”
According to board member Jacquie Golden (II), Ms. Carpenter has improved the quality of the activities and successfully promoted ODP this year. Jacquie has noticed increased participation this year compared to her last two years as part of ODP. Ms. Carpenter has focused on climbing, hiking, and water activities with the hope of “providing accessible trips of different levels for the whole upper school to participate and still gain a great deal of knowledge regardless of experience going into the trips.”
By varying the level difficulty, Ms. Carpenter has offered opportunities for all students despite their experience and comfort with the outdoors. When asked about future plans for the program, she responded, “as an interim replacement for this position, it is hard to posit long term what the program will look like or where it is going.” She continued, saying that she “hopes that the program will continue to grow in a direction to create leadership and stewardship by students and faculty alike. I would love to see the program involve more of the Milton faculty and students. We have such an amazing resource in the outdoor program, the gear, and the knowledge in our participants that I would really like to see this developed and utilized as much as possible, really creating leaders in the outdoor community.”
Each year, the Outdoor Program hosts a Spring Break outdoor trip. This year, ODP is hosting a kayaking trip around the Cortez in Baja from March 12-19. People participating on the trip will camp on the beach. Although the majority of the trip will revolve around kayaking during the day, students will have the opportunity to hike, snorkel and explore the beaches and hills on the ocean in their free time. They will also cook on campfires, sleep in tents, and enjoy outdoor living. This trip is a perfect opportunity for students looking for a fun spring break adventure.
ODP also encourages involvement in summer activities including volunteer programs, jobs in the outdoors, and programs locally and abroad. From Overland biking to Wilderness Ventures, there are ample opportunities that students should seize. If you are interested, email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
