The Milton Measure

The Hub

by Jack Weiler on Friday, October 16th, 2015

Milton sports are becoming increasingly competitive, serious, and popular. Last spring alone, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team, Varsity Track Team, and Boys JV Lacrosse team were undefeated in the Independent School League (ISL), and the Track and Tennis teams won the ISL Championship. To become more involved in Milton Athletics, students can participate in MA Sports Hub, a club started by now-seniors Anna Digravio (I) and Madeline Murphy (I), that celebrates sports both on and off campus. Last year the Sports Hub started fundraisers, increased school spirit, and designed the Nobles Day “No Dawgs Allowed” tees. They even raised money for various charities by running a faculty dunk tank for coaches of varsity sports. One thing is for sure: MA Sports Hub knows how to get the student body psyched, whether for an under the lights game or Nobles’ Day.

I spoke to many members of the Sports Hub, including board members and current co-head Madeline Murphy (I), about the club’s new plans for this year, what they are planning to repeat, and anything else new with the club.

Board member Jack Czarniak (III), gave a general overview of the year for them. According to Jack, the group “plans on fundraising again, like the dunk tank last year.” I also talked to board member Claire Dudley (III) who mentioned that they have a lot more students than they did last year. More and more students are coming to the meetings and they hope this encourages even more spirit for school sports, according to Claire.

When talking to Madeline, I learned that her and the club’s biggest goal for the year is to draw more students to sporting events. Right now, sports are popular at Milton as highlighted by of the Instagram account @ma_athletics, which reports scores, records, and updates. However, Milton still does not have the same fanbase for sports as other schools. Given that we don’t have lights on the football field, we cannot attract students to football games on Friday nights like many other schools across the country. In addition, most games are scheduled at the same time, making it difficult for athletes to attend each other’s games. The Sports Hub is trying to create the atmosphere that we are currently lacking at events.

MA Sports Hub is a fantastic club that can really helps students recognize the value of Milton sports. We have the once a year football game at Milton High, which acts as an SAA event, but right now, most of the events are non-sporting. Weekend events, especially on Friday nights, overflow with students. Tickets often sell out for plays and other events like Dance Concert. We have a very involved student body that, in my opinion, would be happy to go to sporting events to cheer on its piers if given the incentive. MA Sports Hub looks to be a catalyst in changing our weekend school atmosphere by increasing school spirit.
