Artist of the Week: Nanseera Wolf (IV)

Nanseera Wolff (IV) has been surrounded by music her entire life; ever since she was little, her house has been filled with musical notes. “My dad plays guitar!” Nanseera says. “He has been playing and singing for as long as I can remember, and that inspired me to play.” On her sixth birthday, Nanseera received her own guitar, a gift that sparked the beginning of her musical career. Since then, Nanseera has developed as a vocalist and musician and has grown to write her own material for her performances. Nanseera plays a wide range of music, including genres from pop and rock to singer-songwriter and soul. She takes inspiration from artists such as Birdy, Lana Del Rey, and Joss Stone, all artists known for their unique flair. Nanseera is particularly influenced by Birdy—an artist famous for her acoustic covers and strong vocal—and her inventive songs. Wolff’s music reflects upon these styles, as she uses acoustic instruments and has emphasis on lyrics and vocals. Wolff is not only a solo act; she has also performed as the lead singer in a band and is a part of the Milton a cappella group Octet.
Wolff’s original material is equally as impressive as her performances. She started writing when she was eight years old, after a difficult move from Uganda to Ethiopia. She missed her family and friends, and she used her writing as an outlet to work through the hurting caused by the move. Unlike other writers and artists who write about love and heartbreak, she concentrates on learning about one’s self. She adds that she mostly focuses on “finding a new identity in a new place and learning about yourself through your changed surroundings.” Nanseera is not afraid to experiment with her music, recently writing a song with a verse in French.
There is no doubt that Nanseera Wolff is a talented individual. Not many students our age possess a similar musical prowess, much less the ability to write original material. Milton is fortunate to have a truly gifted musician in its midst.
