Swift Joins The Voice

The Voice, a reality TV show, started in the spring of 2011 and continues to air today. For those who have not had the chance to watch this show, the set-up is simple: it’s an alternate version of American Idol where contestants face a series of challenges—at first, anonymous—to impress the judges with their singing skills. However, The Voice is considered by many viewers to be newer and ‘more hip.’ Winners include Javier Colon, Cassadee Pope and Danielle Bradbery. Paralleling its abundance of viewers, the show has gone through many rounds of judges. Past and current judges include Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Gwen Stefani and Usher.
One notable woman may soon join the cast of The Voice: Taylor Swift. According to hollywoodlife.com, as of now, Swift is a celebrity advisor but has not yet signed to be a judge. Producers say that they want to prep her to be the next judge on The Voice, but can she handle it? At 24, she already counts as hits “Teardrops on my Guitar,” “Love Story,” “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “Shake it Off,” among others. Born in 1989, Swift moved to Tennessee at age 14 to pursue her career in country music. Since signing with Big Machine Records, she has received an award in Best New Artist, Album of the Year and four other Grammy Awards. In 2012, her album Red gained 1.2 million sales. She became the first woman to break the record of having two million sales in the first week. Considering T-Swift’s track record, many viewers think that she will be a great addition to the show. Her lively, happy personality might complement those of the rest of the judges. As a celebrity advisor, Swift will coach the contestants in their singing skills and their on-stage performance.
In middle school, I loved Taylor Swift. I remember the days I jammed along to “Love Story” and “Our Song.” While those days have passed, I applaud Swift for becoming something greater and trying new things. Nevertheless, one question remains: does she have what it takes to be The Voice’s next judge?
