A strong individual and team effort allowed Boys’ Varsity Tennis to steamroll competition on its way to the 2014 ISL Championship.

According to team member Neel Taneja (II), the bar was set “very high given the talent on the team,” a mindset that began with a new coach, an alum and former Milton Tennis player, Chad Bright-Reason ’98. Captains Alex Lee (I) and Andy Hahm (II) along with varsity veterans Bart Panarese (I), Chris McDonough (I), Alex Vivado (II), and Neel Taneja (II) led this year’s squad. The team also welcomed two new players to the team this year: Neekon Vafa (II) and Noah Cheng (IV).

The team got off to a good start before facing a fierce opponent, Belmont Hill, midway through the season. Despite a disappointing showing in doubles, the Mustangs’ work ethic and competitive nature paid off, as they dominated singles en-route to a 9 – 6 victory. Except for a disappointing and uncharacteristic home loss to a skillful Roxbury Latin team, the players continued to destroy their competition, including a strong win against rival Nobles.

The graduating seniors, particularly all-ISL players Bart and Chris, will leave a hole on the roster, but the five returning players are confident that a strong JV pipeline will fill the void. Even with the bar set high by the team’s achievements this year, the 2015 team should be a successful following act.
