Twilight Shines Brightly in Wigg

The Class III Performing English monologues, better known as the Twilight performance, are always a favorite on campus, crossing the boundaries of sophistication and social acceptance, and throwing caution to the wind. There were plenty of laughs and laments heard in Wigg Hall last Thursday night as members of the Milton community put their hearts, souls, and sometimes even their sense of decorum on stage. In all, the Twilight performances allowed students the opportunity not only to portray their peers, but also to perform stories that may not have otherwise been heard.

The title of this event is inspired by Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles. In her play, Smith transforms herself into several different individuals, initially interviewing each on a certain topic and using their words, speech patterns, mannerisms, attitudes, and dress to embody them on the stage. This method allows actors to depict their subject most accurately.

Each Performing English class picked a theme about which to interview their subjects and later mimic. For example, Ms. Bond’s class chose to ask their subjects about their biggest regret, and last year Ms. Polk’s class depicted its subjects’ first kisses. After interviews, the English students wrote their scripts, crafting 1 ½ -2 minute monologues. Student actors were graded on the interviews conducted with their subjects and the planning of the production, as well as the final performance. Finally, the big night arrived, and all Performing English students performed their monologues on May 8th.

Kellie Quinn, whose theme was the “One Biggest Regret,” portrayed Katherine Flaherty (II), whose biggest regret was her goth clothing stage back in the 5th grade. On the other hand, Jam Smith’s monologue depicted his Chemistry teacher, Mr. Tyler who “has not one regret.”
