Girls’ Tennis Crushes the Court
by Abby Lebovitz on Friday, April 25th, 2014
It would be an understatement to say the Varsity Girls’ Tennis Team has had a good start to their season. In its first four matches, the team has swept almost every opponent, totaling their overall number of victories to an incredible seventy-four sets. Last Wednesday, the team redeemed itself against Middlesex, the only team they lost to last season, and won 15-0.
Consisting of six seniors, one sophomore, and three new freshmen, including the manager, the team has happily taken in new freshman Semi Oloko (IV), Te Palandjian (IV) and Julia Lebovitz (IV). They fit in perfectly with the fun yet competitive environment. Steadily positioned at two on the ladder, Semi has decimated each of her opponents, even making one tear up because of Semi’s fierceness on the court. Te has also made strong contributions to the squad thus far. Like Oloko, Te has managed to beat her opponents through her superior one-handed backhand. An aggressive but thoughtful player, she creates opportunity for herself on the court by moving her opponents around and crushing any approach shot. While Julia remains sidelined because of an injury, the team knows she will be an instant contributor as soon as she takes the courts.
Although there are not many seniors on the top of the ladder this season, each of the five seniors—Abby Lebovitz, llve Bayturk, Kaitlin Gately, Kendall Hall, and Riley Kinney— holds a strong roll on the team. Hall shares, “I love being part of such a special team. I enjoy playing doubles with Abby, but more importantly, I love when the team gets to eat the gushers!”
The team hopes to continue their winning streak, as they progress into some tougher matches in the upcoming weeks. With such a successful run so far, the team has dedicated the season to last year’s captain, Merritt Levitan (‘13), as she truly helped them “levitate.”
