Faculty Spotlight: Mrs. Dunnington
by Claire Russell on Friday, November 22nd, 2013Upon entering Straus, do you ever wonder the identity of that friendly lady to your right? The engine that keeps the College Office organized and functioning, the savior for all who are enduring the college process, and the loving mother residing in Millet with her husband and kids is none other than Mrs. Sandi Dunnington.
Mrs. Dunnington has been a part of the Milton Academy faculty and Milton’s College Office for the last eight years. She is the go-to person for all college-related matters. Dunnington says she offers “support” to both “the counselors as well as the students.” Her duties include preparing weekly college newsletters, planning for college fairs, answering numerous questions regarding college applications, and working on schedules for meeting between counselors and students.
Mrs. Dunnington is, by nature, a very compassionate person who truly enjoys “helping people.” A graduate of Milton High School, Dunnington studied hospitality in college, and while she did not foresee working at a high school, the job suits her caring nature well.
The hardest aspect of Mrs. Dunnington’s job has proven to be “the pace.” Milton Academy students live fast moving lives, always thinking a few steps ahead in order to stay on top of academics, athletics, extracurriculars and, as seniors, college applications. Dunnington says, “As soon as we get back to school in the fall, the seniors are racing and I’m trying to keep up with them!” Still, each year, Mrs. Dunnington returns to make each year a success for the four college counselors as well as the seniors.
Dunnington’s favorite part about her job at Milton is the people. She claims the “community of people here, both students, faculty, and staff, are wonderful.” In dealing with the difficult loss of her father this past month, Dunnington says she felt the “support” of the community who “could not have been more caring.” This support is clearly well-deserved, as Mrs. Dunnington is an extremely well-respected and appreciated member of the Milton community. A help to every student, an honorary dorm parent, and a mother who, after taking time off from work to focus on her children, was eagerly asked to return, Mrs. Dunnington is constantly giving of herself to others.
Aside from her work at Milton Academy, Mrs. Dunnington has many hobbies. Her favorite is reading, though she says she doesn’t “get much chance in the fall.” She also enjoys gardening, hiking, and doing art projects with her kids, Sam and Annie.
With sharp focus and a cheerful disposition, Mrs. Dunnington accomplishes so much in the College Office, whether she is doing whatever it takes to get a student’s application in before a tight deadline, or simply giving a smile and a “how are you?” to those walking by her office. Next time you are in Straus, give her a hello and maybe even a thank you; she certainly deserves it.
