Country Music Awards

On Wednesday, November 6th, country stars Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley hosted the 47th annual Country Music Awards for the sixth consecutive time. Considered by many to be the biggest night of country music, this event featured top performers such as Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, and Eric Church. Supplementing the star-studded performances and prestigious award dedications was a tribute to country star Kenny Rodgers. Rodgers, who has recently been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to country music.
The CMA website reports that Blake Shelton received five nominations, and Taylor Swift and newcomer Kacey Musgraves each snagged six. This year, Swift was nominated for her third Entertainer of the Year award. When asked about her nomination, Swift remarked to the Associated Press that winning the award for the third time would be “absolutely incredible for her fans.” However, Luke Bryan broke Swift’s streak, taking home this award.
Shelton has crushed the charts this year, and his song “Boys Round Here” was nominated for Vocal Event of the Year. Though he lost out to “The Only Way I Know” by Jason Aldean with Luke Bryan and Eric Church, Shelton co-wrote “Over You,” which won Song of the Year and Single Record of the Year. Performed and co-written by his wife Miranda Lambert, this song just goes to show the power of a collaborative effort grounded in love.
Similarly popular, Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” was nominated for Musical Event of the Year and Single of the Year. Though the band lost these two categories, they were able to win New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year and New Artist of the Year.
According to the CMA website, when it comes to the process of choosing winners for each category, there are three rounds of balloting, in which votes are cast by industry professional members of the Country Music Association. This year, for the first time ever, digital viewers had the opportunity to watch the CMA Awards on their devices, with eleven different camera options of their choice on on the Country Music Awards website.
With its impressive performances and prestigious awards, the Country Music Awards is unsurprisingly compared to the Grammys and Oscars. Visit www.CMAAwards.com for highlights.
