World Cup Qualifications Wrap Up
by James Maguire on Friday, October 25th, 2013
Over the past few months, soccer teams all around the globe have been playing for an opportunity to make it to arguably the most important competition in sports: the FIFA World Cup. Like the Olympics, the World Cup occurs once every four years, making this title extremely covetable. Teams play a multitude of games within their respective continental groups to determine who will make the playoffs, where teams will go head-to-head for the ultimate prize: a trip to Brazil. Though the playoff winners will not be decided until November, a few teams have already emerged as strong contenders for the winning title.
The USA team, led by former New England Revolution’s Clint Dempsey and LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan, has dominated the North American division. Currently, they are ranked first with seven wins, one draw, and two losses. Similarly, Honduras and Costa Rica have had a successful run; these three countries have already clinched their spots in the World Cup. Mexico and New Zealand will play two intercontinental playoff games to determine the final spot.
In Europe, nine teams have already qualified through grit and hard work, but four spots remain. As usual, the classic powerhouses, France, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain, have already proved to be strong contenders. The eight runners up will be split into pairs, and in November, they will have playoffs to decide the remaining four spots.
In this Asia and South American grouping, Jordan will play Uruguay in November for the final spot, as five teams from South America and four teams from Asia have qualified for the Cup. Meanwhile, the African teams are entering their last round of playoff games in November for five spots. When play-offs begin, look for Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay to move deep into the tournament.
With many inspiring performances and a few upsets, the qualifiers have already given viewers all around the world a very exciting show. Tune in to watch the action continue to unfold in Brazil 2014.
