College Football: The Drama Ensues

by on Monday, September 30th, 2013

The college football season is only four weeks in, and there is already plenty to talk about. The first-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide looks unstoppable thus far, with hopes of winning the BCS National Championship for an unprecedented third consecutive year. Even Texas A&M, with star quarterback and reigning Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel, failed to contain the Crimson Tide as they pulled out a close 49-42 win over the Aggies two weeks ago. While Manziel has his eyes on a second Heisman trophy, Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd, Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, and Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney are strong contenders as well. After this disappointing game, Manziel hopes his performance on field proves that he is deserving of this title.

Also at the top of the polls are the Oregon Ducks, despite the loss of former head coach Chip Kelly to the Philadelphia Eagles. Experts believe that the second-ranked Ducks, with their high-powered offense, are one of the few teams that could knock off the mighty Crimson Tide. The Ducks and the Tide play two entirely different styles of football, but the result of their matchup is sure to produce the year’s biggest drama. The Ohio State Buckeyes are another team poised to play for the national championship. With second year coach Urban Meyer at the helm and a stable of talented quarterbacks, the Buckeyes will go into the remainder of the season with nothing but the highest hopes. The Buckeyes, ranked fourth, look to maintain the momentum of their undefeated 2012 season, as they take on the Wisconsin Badgers’ mighty backfield this week. After a loss to Arizona State University, the Badgers are looking to respond to an undeservedly blemished record. Stanford, another highly potent West Coast team, has also demonstrated that their success over the past couple years isn’t fleeting, but their remaining schedule may prove to be a challenge.

Due to their convincing win against a well-coached Texas A&M team, the Tide remain the favorite for this year’s title, and if they pull it off, head coach Nick Saban will further ensure his place in the pantheon of college football history.
