MA Wrestling Caps Off Stellar Season

by Jeremy Mittleman on Friday, February 22nd, 2013

The 2012-2013 Mustang wrestling team has had its most successful season in recent history. Boasting a final record of 11-4, including a signature suspense-filled win against Nobles – the first one in many years – the Mustangs tied for third place in the league in dual-meet competition. With multiple wrestlers out due to injury or the Class II College Weekend, the team did not know what to expect going into the Northern New England Invitational at Hyde, Connecticut on February 2nd. At the end of the day, however, the team claimed an impressive 2nd place, finishing closely behind Andover. Individual placewinners included Teddy Nwachuku (3rd-120), Jack Curtain (4th-132), Charles Wang (2nd-152), Clay Desir (3rd-182), and Corey Hales (3rd-195), among many others.
A week later, the Mustangs traveled to Nobles for the annual Graves-Kelsey Tournament, which serves as the ISL championship. After an exciting day filled with some incredibly gritty performances, Milton earned 4th place, finishing behind only Roxbury Latin, St. Paul’s, and perennial powerhouse Belmont Hill. Individual placewinners included Matt Chea (4th- 106), Teddy Nwachuku (3rd-120), Jack Curtain (4th-132), Mack Makashima (6th-138), Kali Robinson (4th-145), Kevin Lee (4th-152), Jude Simplice (5th-160), Adam Basri (1st-220), and Matt Morin (2nd-285).

With a fourth place or better finish in the league tournament or a better than ⅔ winning percentage through the dual-meet season, a wrestler qualifies for the New England Tournament at Choate Rosemary Hall, held last Friday and Saturday. Seven Milton wrestlers qualified, and all placed in the top twelve. First-year wrestler Matt Chea placed 8th at 106 lbs., Adam Basri placed 6th at 220 lbs., and Kali Robinson placed 4th at 145 lbs. Kali, originally seeded 7th, had an amazing day, eventually pinning the 4th seed of the tournament.

Kali and Adam have qualified for Prep Nationals, which will be held at Lehigh University today and tomorrow. Wish them good luck, and congratulate all of the wrestlers who have contributed to a fantastic season.
