“Let the odds be ever in your favor,” is the favorite phrase of millions of Hunger Games fans around the world. The series written by Suzanne Collins is a page-turning trilogy that has captivated thousands of children and adults worldwide. What exactly is the mystery ingredient in the Hunger Games formula that draws fans so fervently to the adventures of Katniss Everdeen? More importantly, what has made the Hunger Games the next big “Harry Potter” or “Twilight” series? With enormous box office hits grossing an incredible $152.5 million in just the first week, the Hunger Games continued to be the most popular movie in theaters even three weeks after its release.
The Hunger Games’ fast-paced and constantly twisting story line keeps the audience intrigued for a full two hours and twenty-two minutes. The action starts at the emotionally-charged, much anticipated “reaping” scene. Viewers watch Katniss volunteer as tribute so that her sister will not have to take part in the annual “Hunger Games,” a nationally televised fight to the death between twenty four teenagers. Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss, reflected on her characters’ significance: “It speaks to what just one person can do. I think it’s so important that young people understand they do have so much power in this new generation, and this is just one girl that changes everything.” Packed with action, emotion, and adventure, with just a touch of romance, the film successfully keeps audience members on the edge of their seats and fully involved in the story.
The subject matter of the Hunger Games has raised some controversy. While some viewers complain that the film tends towards violence and inspires aggression in children, others believe the film promotes courage and heart. Unlike Bella, the apathetic, sits-inside-for-months-at-a-time-when-Edward-is-gone heroine of Twilight, Katniss is a strong female role model who fights for the honor of her district and for her family. She is not driven by her love for either of leading male characters, but by her genuine need to survive.
The overall casting of the film is effective at establishing these strong characters. Jennifer Lawrence captures Katniss’ iron will, and teen heart throbs such as Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth light up the screen as Peeta, Katniss’ fellow tribute and love interest, and Gale, her hunky best friend and hunting companion. When asked about the film’s quality of acting, a sophomore stated, “The stars cast for the film did an amazing job and portrayed each of their characters perfectly!” The Hunger Games may be different from other blockbuster films, but its difference is what gives it strength. This hit series has already become Hollywood’s next teen-based fantasy franchise, and people cannot afford to miss out on this incredible movie experience.
