by Faith Pang on Friday, May 18th, 2012Based on the Marvel universe, The Avengers is Hollywood’s latest blockbuster. The American comic book film, budgeted at about $220 million, had the strongest-ever movie box office opening. As a mash-up of many super heroes, the Avengers starred many famous actors and actresses: Robert Downy Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. If those names aren’t enough to make you want to see the movie, you’ll also be missing out on a fantastic super-powered joyride.
The story starts when Loki, brother of Thor, is exiled from his native Asgard into space. He soon meets the leader of an alien race and makes a deal with him; in exchange for Asgard’s magical energy source, the Tesseract, Loki will receive an army of aliens with which to enslave the Earth. Back on Earth, where Nick Fury and his team are studying the Tesseract, it suddenly activates, opening a portal and allowing Loki to find his way to our planet. The battle that ensues pits heroes against seemingly-impossible odds. Add in super-sized personalities clashing against each other, and you have the recipe for an eye-popping piece of entertainment.
The Avengers is crazy, mind-boggling, and action packed. You can’t sit a minute without an explosion rocking you from your seat. Santa Vivar (IV) of Norris House said, “It was a great film. It has an action-y, funny and cool side to it! And the cast was awesome!” The Avengers has everything you want in an action film: those cheesy jokes after hugely violent scenes, people dressed in incredible costumes, Hollywood stars looking fantastic no matter how dirt-smeared and grimy they are after battles, and, above all, action. Who doesn’t want to see a movie jam-packed with every super hero you could think of?
It’s always fun to imagine who would win: the Hulk or Iron Man? Captain America or Thor? Well, you don’t have to imagine anymore, because Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers, has done it for you–only this time, all those popular icons are putting aside their differences to save the world.
The Avengers, packed with excitement, romance, and comedy, is a hit among Milton students. Earlier last week, the Forbes boys saw the midnight showing as a dorm event. Gibson Dintersmith (IV) said the movie was “awesome in 3D,” and other students also would consider seeing it a second time. Peter Ambrus (IV) summed it up by saying, “[The Avengers was] pretty legit.”
With such a great, heroic movie, one always hopes for a sequel. And wouldn’t you know, it ends with the perfect opening for a follow up film, so stay excited! If you haven’t seen The Avengers yet, I strongly encourage you to get a ticket! It will keep you on your toes and ready for pulse-pounding action– who knows, maybe you’ll even buy your own super suit in hopes of starring in the sequel.
