Chamber Groups go on Tour in Poland and Germany
by Ashley Bae on Thursday, March 8th, 2012
From March 9th through March 17th 2012, Milton Academy’s Chamber Singers and Chamber Orchestra members will visit Poland and Germany for their biennial spring break trip, which alternates with the Milton Jazz trip to South Africa.
This year’s itinerary includes touring Warsaw, Auschwitz, Wroclaw, and Berlin, and performing four concerts at various churches and synagogues in Poland and Germany. Students will perform pieces by Frank Tichelli, Clare Grundman, George Handel, and Joesph Haydn, among others. Six Chamber Orchestra musicians will be featured during the performance. Seniors Karen Li and Kate Ballinger will have solos on the violin and saxophone respectively. A Mozart clarinet quintet will feature Brittany Lee (II) on the viola, Elly Day (I) on the clarinet, EJ Bennett (I) on the cello, and Tori Muse (I) and Karen Li (I) on the violin.
The Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Singers are all looking forward to this opportunity to perform in Europe. Superstar trumpeter Seth August (I) shared his enthusiasm for the trip: “I’m looking forward to an emotional return to my ancestral homeland.” Brittany Lee is “excited for the experience [of playing in the Mozart quintet] because this will be the first time [she] will be a part of something other than the orchestra.”
On this coming Thursday, March 8, the Chamber Singers and Chamber Orchestra will perform a pre-tour concert from 7:00-8:00 pm in King Theatre to kick off the spring break trip and to allow parents to listen to the repertoire. This endowed concert is held in honor of Margaret Filoon Robertson and funded by the Robertson family.
Previous Chamber Singer and Chamber Orchestra trips have been to Spain, Italy, Hawaii, and the Czech Republic/Prague. This trip to Germany and Poland will provide the students with an amazing opportunity to explore history as well as music.
