Milton Alumni LinkedIn

Throughout the years, Milton’s strong connection to its alumni has been an asset to the school. Milton’s Development Office helps forge this bond through social media, bringing together alumni from diverse industries.
Notwithstanding the turbulence of the global economy, Milton alumni continue to create success at all levels. Milton Academy’s Development Office coordinates and connects these former students, strengthening a bond forged years ago. LinkedIn, one of Facebook’s social networking counterparts, presents the professional world an opportunity to create and share online profiles.
The Development Office tracks the movement of these graduates wherever they might be, through the “Milton Academy Alumni” group on LinkedIn. The Office also compiles statistics of the present location of alums, their current professions, recent promotions, and other accomplishments. As of February 1, 2012, the group “Milton Academy Alumni” consisted of 736 members, a significant growth since its inception on August 4, 2008.
In the current economy, Milton alums have found a niche in the Financial Services sector: within the LinkedIn group, 169 of 736 members are a part of this industry. Law Practice, Marketing and Advertising, and Higher Education followed the Financial Services industry with 6%, 5%, and 4% involvement, respectively. Behind these first four industries, Management Consulting and the Information Technology and Services trail with 4% and 3% of registered graduates.
Many (36 %) within LinkedIn report their present location to be the Greater Boston Area. This statistic shows that while many graduates have stayed in the nearby Boston Area, the majority have left for other urban areas such as the New York City Area (20%), the San Francisco Bay Area (7%), and the Washington D.C. Metro Area (6%). The fifth and sixth most popular places of residence are the Greater Los Angeles Area and the Greater Chicago Area, respectively, further accentuating the apparent trend that the large majority of Milton alumni end up in urban settings.
Traditionally, young adults tend to utilize social media at a greater rate than the older demographic. Yet, the Development Office’s Kirsten Ostrem, Director of Annual Programs, explains that while “certainly not everyone is on LinkedIn… there are definitely people in their fifties and sixties [on the website].” This sentiment echoes with many older LinkedIn users who access the website almost entirely for networking and online business relationships.
Also on the group page is a demographic listing by seniority. A little over 20% of registered alumni hold senior level jobs (150 of 736). Milton alumni held senior and entry-level jobs more than any other posts, but common positions also included Director, VP, Manager, and Owner.
As a school, Milton Academy takes pride in its alumni, and the graduates’ careers in the years after Milton matter greatly to the school. The use of social networking site LinkedIn assists the Development Office in maintaining this connection. Without a doubt, the Development Office has opened itself to a realm of capabilities by expanding alumni relations to the social networking scene.
