3rd Gospel Explosion
by The Milton Measure on Friday, February 10th, 2012
On February 3rd, the Gospel Explosion transformed Wigglesworth Hall into a hub for rhythm and soul. Performers included the L.I.G.H.T. Steppers, who came earlier this year for the Step to Impress event, as well as Milton Academy’s own gospel choir. Liane Thornhill (II), Brittany Owens (I), Kamyra Edokpolor (I) and Petra Imouokhome (II), started off the night with a powerful a capella performance.
The event host, Liane, then officially opened Gospel Explosion with a warm welcome before clearing the floor for Mr. Hilgendorf, who started the night in prayer. The first guest singer, Darlene Wynn, astounded the crowd with her masterful and passionate performance. Voice ringing throughout the hallway, Darlene sang 3 gut-wrenching songs that showcased her talent. Following Wynn’s vocals, Jordan Quintin (II), in Milton’s Christian Fellowship, read aloud a passage from 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 expressing the patience of love. Later on, Kamyra, Brittany and Liane performed yet another coordinated song.
After a brief intermission, during which CDs of Darlene Wynn and local duo the Oladipo Sisters were available for sale, the Sisters themselves were introduced to the stage.
The two sisters, ages eleven and thirteen, blew the minds of the audience with their all-too-brief vocal set composed of songs from their church and original songs written by their older sisters, the founders of the Gospel choir at Milton. The girls sang in perfect harmony, swaying to the beat of the music. Inspired by the music, several audience members stood up and began to dance.
As the singing concluded, the L.I.G.H.T. Steppers “stepped” into the room. The young group of dancers, who range from as young as nine years old to fifteen, thoroughly impressed the audience with an intricate routine.
Next, Ms. Dow announced the Gospel choir. The group of about twenty students performed two songs. The set was so soulful and joyous that students and adults around the room joined in song, and dance, clapping along to the rhythm. It was a true moment of unison for students, teachers and family members. Finally Offiong Bassey was introduced to stage. With her incredible voice, ranging a full 4 chords, she sang three songs, the first in Efik, the second a mix of Efik and English and the third in English.
This was the third annual gospel explosion, and there will be many more to come.
